I used a sharp butcher knife position the blade about half inch past the dead part and give it a good tap with a hammer and that should split it:) remember to dip it iodine solution for 5 mins before putting back in the tank

Try having a fellow reefer hold it for you until you get your water in line. I'm sure there's someone around you that would be willing.

Well I used a dremel with diamond black and cut as much dead skeleton as possible without getting too close the "live" part couple days ago seemed fine till today it's somewhat starting to recede again :/
