Hi All,

So I've been looking at a bunch of different sump designs on YouTube tonight and have seen a few where the refugium is a different tank above the sump that drains into the main sump with the skimmer and reactors.

What are the pros and cons of this type of setup? I'm going to be doing a 180 gallon tank (72x24x24) and trying to figure out what's the best sump design.

Planning on doing a mixed reef, heavy socked, (I have kids).

Thoughts?

The big pro is more room in the sump for other gear and it would probably let you do a bigger fuge.

If you go this route I would make the water level in the fuge intentionally low, and them put in a 2nd bulkhead a little higher so it will still drain to the sump if (er, when) the first bulkhead clogs up.
