I tried my hand at running a diy ats as well. I had mixed results. There was a lot of evaporation due to the bubbles but I feel that not running a protein skimmer was harmful. Now I just do chaeto and run my protein skimmer and I am seeing better results.

I had the opposite experience. When running an ATS my corals grow better. The skimmer pulls out all proteins good and bad. Where the ATS broke down the bad and turned it into food for the corals. Plus my pod population exploded with the ATS that I had no problem keeping fish that wouldn't eat frozen or man made foods.

I myself don't have a refugium, but I understand phosphates lead to algae so I have a clump of chaeto in my sump. Seems too counter productive to grow a nuisance algae in hopes of not getting the same nuisance algae else where in the tank. Just my 0.02 cents though.
What kind of light do you use? I was thinking of doing the same thing.

Serious question to all that chimed in saying how they used to use ATS and that it worked great. If it worked so good, why aren't you still using it?

On a newly cycling tank at what point should the ATS be add to the system?
I used an ATS on the 180 from day one. It took about 2 weeks for the ATS to start getting patches of gha on it. But the tank never went though a full cycle. I had a slight mini cycle but didn't loose a fish or coral. All the rock was kept alive (from my 130 break down) in a few ice chests while I was building the stand. I added about 20 gallons of water from the ice chests and made 200 gallons fresh salt water that went into the system. I did get a massive gha bloom but that was do to using old dried out sand. But the gha was gone in a month.

But today I took out my skimmers and made the second chamber a second ATS.

My timer stopped working and all the gha died. I just noticed this last week. I'm breaking down my setup to redo it, but I will use it again when I set up again.

From what I've seen, this is a great investment. I would have love to set one up on my 110g but didn't know where to purchase the system. Good luck with yours.

Larry
I will give an update in about a month once I see results good or bad. Here is where I got mine from http://www.santa-monica.cc/if your looking to buy and not build one.
