I'm doing a treatment for clowns as a preventative measure.

I'm just wondering what is the best way to clean off formalin from the bucket or tank I had the fish swimming in? Just plain tap water with some prime? Let it evaporate?

Formalin (or formaldehyde/paraformaldehyde 10% soln) is nasty stuff. In an lab, you just can't dilute it with water down the drain, & it lingers on containers. We had special hazmat containers for it.

At home you should treat all the liquid before dumping, put on goggles, slowly add sodium biaulfate or sodium hydroxide (lye) or hydrogen peroxide untill there is no reaction. Dump the neutralized formalin down the drain, then rinse the container with water a few times.

Good luck!

You're using 37% formalin correct?

I think seahorses are cool.

I shouldn't really say preventative, as the clown had brook and i did fresh water dip it. it looks fine now, but i don't know if brook is still there. i assume it is.

how do i treat all the liquid before dumping? so far i'm just keeping everything outside. the one thing is last time when i cleaned the bucket i only just rinsed it with some tap water and scrubbed gently once. does the formalin stay in the bucket? do you use prime to neutralize it?

i did a second treatment on the clownfish today and it didn't seem to like it so much this time. it made me think if the old formalin was still in there.

no i'm using 37% formalin. Fishvet Formalin MS to be exact found here http://www.fishvet.com/Formalin-MS.htm it is 37% and i use "20 drops per gallon" as advised by the bottle. I'm only using it as a dip for 20-40 minutes (today only 20 because the clown seemed like it was trying to get out of the tank after 15 minutes)

I calculate you are mixing up 2% solution, which is safe to dump down the drain according to LADWP website (3% formaldehyde solution is the cutoff). However, I would not use that treament bucket for anything else. Be careful with the stock 37% solution!

My first concern would be for human life- formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen.

I would rinse the bucket with ~10 gallons of water, then leave it out of the house/garage to air dry. Even the fumes are dangerous and it has a high vapor peessure.

My whole point is that formalin (formaldehyde) is not a targed antibiotic, but a non specific chemical. It hurts all living things, but at lower concetrations we can survive it while parasites and smaller organisms still die. Im just trying to help other reefers understand it they way I do.

Got it and I agree, I'm keeping it outside. It's already dried off, but I may rinse it a few times and let it dry again.

how does formalin cause cancer? is it through the breathing or skin contact? Do I need more than just those simple dust/SATS mask when using it?

Maybe not. In high concentrations yes so be careful. Personally i follow the same above advice and have dedicated hospital tanks and buckets. Im paranoid so i throw them out. Read directions and follow basic poision control procedures, its like working with turpentine or used motor oil.
personally IMO thre are less scary methods.

for more info on your formaline product look up the MSDS on the item.
Bacon also contains carcinogens.

Weird????? I use formalin and copper in my Qt tank. I just add airstone to remove the formalin and Poly filter pad to remove the copper. Few months later I added CUC and corals and it was fine. Save me your buckets and tanks if you are throwing them away because you use formalin in them!!!! OP I would just rinse with tap water and air dry
