I was noticing one of my mini coral colonies was moving/shiting all the time. So I decided to check it out and maybe move it to another spot. When I lifted the colony, I saw this guy ....

Is this guy safe? How and the hell did he grow from nothing? Is this normal? :)
He was not a hitch hiker on anything.

Could be a rock boring urchin. Doesn't look like a diadema sp. based on the spines. Rock boring urchins actually chew through rock, but they're usually so slow at it that most folks don't consider them a pest.

I have not added any new rock since the tank was setup a year or so ago. I wil let him out of the cup. :) Hopefully he will not knock over my frags. :) Better get the gel out again. Thank you everyone for the replies.

I found one just like that when I switched tanks. It's is a rock boring type and I never saw him until I lifted up the LR that he was attached to.

I did some research and rock urchins in general are reef safe but not necessarily "acrylic safe".

If I had glass I would keep him, but I opted to give him away since I have acrylic.
