Thinking of removing 2 KZ Super blue and replace them with 2 E5 blue pop. Im using an 8 lamp SP with (6) KZ Super blue, and (2) KZ fiji pink. Lamps are finally burned in and loving the Kelvin ATM.

I just swapped out my ATI Blue Plus with 2 48" E5 Blues. Very Deep blue, I totally dig them, gives good pop. Got 'em with my ATI Coral Plus. Keeping my coral plus to ensure its getting full spectrum and optimal growth.

So I thought about it. E5 is up to 45% less wattage says Reefbuilder via wattage meter:

Regular 48" 54 watts T5 ($25 @ LFS) use 8 hours/day @ average $0.25/killowatt. Bulb switch every 6 months.

Annual Cost - $50 in bulb changes plus $39 in electrical - $89

vs.

E5 blue pop 48" @ 30 watts T5 LED ($70 retail) used 8 hours/day @ average $0.25/kilowatt. Bulb switch 8 years.

Annual Cost - $70 one time bulb purchase plus $22 in electrical. - $92

Soooo... after the first year its nearly dead even in cost and operation. for the next 7 years of its life span, it will save $17 in annual electricity per bulb and $50 in bulb changes annually. $67 savings per bulb slot per year.

Its late, maybe my numbers are wrong, looks good to me right now...

Except that the par of the e5 is nowhere near the same as the blue+. Also if you are changing your bulb out every 6 mos you are doing it wrong.

If bulbs are ran 6 - 7 hours a day, how often do you feel they should be changed out?

I think that might be applied for the Chinese produced T5 then. Correction on my end, higher quality is 8-10 months. As for Par goes, I hung out with Euroquatics head US sales rep yesterday for about 30 mins, he did mention that a blue pop is coming with a 'clear' screen to have Par that is equal to the Fluorescent.

Might still fall into the 8-10 month range.

On a programmed start ballast once a year at 10-12 hours. If you are running them even less at 6 hours you can do even longer.

OP if your light doesn't have programmed start go to home depot and buy a Philips icn-4s54 ballast for 40 bucks.

I run my ati bulbs for 8 to 10 hrs a day. I change them out 10 to 12 months. I aim for 10 months, but we know how that goes.

I'm interested to see how these E5 look. Might be nice for an lps tank. Wouldn't do it on my sps tank.

Yes. ATI, Giesemann, and Pac Sun use programmed start which is why they cost more. Pretty much stay away from Fulham Workhorse. Also HEP and Philips programmed start are 1.00 ballast factor and above. This means that they will be 12-25% brighter than a rapid start Workhorse at spec which means no overdriving to achieve this. The ballast factor varies on which size bulb you use. For example:

ICN-2S39T - 24w and 39w ballast. With 24W bulb you get 1.12 ballast factor 39W 1.00.

But seriously if you have a 4ft T5 unit with garbage ballasts this is a no-brainer.

Every HD carries this. They also have the 2bulb version as well non pre-wired at same price so the above is a better deal.
