High ammonia

Hi im new to this i bought 2 home depot 5 gallons bucket to put my reef saver rock in (dry rock) then i put a store bought shrimp in each bucket a day later i took it out now my ammonia is at 8.0 ppm is that ok? Btw im curing my rock any information would be help full im scared im messing up already

Ammonia spike is normal, it should eventually go down and your nitrites should rise up followed up by nitrates. ck out some videos and material on how to cycle dry rocks.

Just keep checking it every other day. Let nature takes its course. When nitrite drops to zero and nitrate is high, then do a big water change.

Hey Kd, dont worry about messing up yet, there is nothing to kill yet lol. ammonia spike is normal. The cycle has just begun and does not have the beneficial bacteria yet to cycle the ammonia into nitrite and then nitrate yet. I would leave it alone for a week or two and then test. no need to waste your tests kits checking daily.

Tell us a little about the tank you are setting up.
