Just saw an email from Marine Depot regarding the maxspect Icecap 3k gyre for $149. Is this new? How is it different than the maxspect xf230 gyre. The former has a 3000 gph max while the older xf230 has a max gph of 2300 and is almost twice as expensive, $289. Please enlighten me.

I'm wondering the same thing because if the intensity can be controlled it seems like it would be a no brainer.

That really is the question. What makes this a bare essential gyre. What bells and whistles are missing or different from the other model? What about the higher price model justifies its higher price?

Thanks Cody, that does help. It seems that as a stand alone pump, there is no reason to buy the more expensive maxspect. Hopefully it is based on their most recent models not the original. Having horrible results twice with the Jecod crossflow, I will probably wait and see how this one plays out long term.

I got it today, I am planning on using it on the new 150 tank. But tested it today on my 75g. I had to turn it down to 40% because it pushes allot of water. The controller is fairly straight forward, but I didnt really like the dial.
Controller allows for schedules, so you can have different patterns and flow % anytime of the day. Controller has a micro SD slot, not sure if its for saving profiles or ?
Over all seems like a good purchase for the $.
I would recommend not removing the protective film on the magnet. If you do, it sticks to the glass pretty good.

The price is right, gyre is incredible flow but the question is quality. Max spect is not my favorite brand because of questionable quality, regardless I have three maxspect gyre pumps

So the question is how good is the quality of icecap ?

The XF 250 and the IceCap 3K are supposed to be two very different pumps. The XF250 produces almost twice the flow as the 3K, have the option of connecting another XF250 to the controller and will soon be able to be controlled wirelessly via Apex. The IceCap 3K is a simple stand alone pump that produces the iconic Gyre flow pattern at a more affordable price
