I just hooked up and turned on ATO, and it started to drain my 10 gallon reservoir. I made a stand for the resevoir, so it sits 24 inches off floor, above sump. I am a asumming the resevoir needs to be the same level as sump? , so the tubing does not just drain it through the pump?

Your reservoir only needs to be higher of your ato tubing end in the sump is submerged. That should stop any siphoning from the sump to the reservoir. Otherwise I don't think it matters much.

You can also save yourself the headache, by putting an air line Tee to break the siphon
