I have sand, i like about 2 to 3 inch.
Some even run a gravel with a RUGF.

Millions of ways to properly do a reef tank. Surprisingly they can all work. They also can all fail.

Can't tell you how many times over the years I was told that my shallow sand bed was a ticking time bomb and would be the downfall of my tank. They said that after a year or two it would crash.

I had both. Honestly, it come down to aesthetics. I started with barebottom because of all the lower maintenance talk on forums, but then realized within the first 2 months that I hated the way it looked. I've had a half inch sand bed for the past year. I give it a light stirring whenever I do a water change and things have been running fairly smooth (knock on wood).
