i would say they are supposed to do what a sea swirl does.

I've seen people use the SeaSwirl like this without the return connected. Just strapped the power head to it for the mechanical movement.

Sea Swirls are a great invention. Love SCWDs too. Just need to use the 1" size to get any good flow because of resistance in their designs.
