So my buddy started a 34 gallon tank. He wants to buy a skimmer, but I told him he would be better off with just a chaeto reactor so it could remove phosphates and nitrates evenly.

Does anyone agree with me? Or do you think he needs both? Or just a skimmer?

I would go skimmer. Macro algae doesnt remove nitrate to phosphate 1 to 1 btw. I think its closer to 4 nitrate to 1 phosphate. It also depends on what is available and......

In this day and age, you can make a pretty reliable skimmer with an air pump, a woodstone, 2" pvc and some cut water bottles.
It helps to have the background of having watched a skimmer work quite a bit before doing a diy, and they are pretty ugly compared to the ones made with cast acrylic, but if budget is the mindset a home made one is fine.

A skimmer is just, generally, a very good thing to have, and a macro algae reactor should just be a supplement.
