Are you running a herbie setup? If you are I would just remove your main standpipe and let it drain into your sock. Ever since I removed my standpipe, now I don't have to worry bout build up in the overflow..oh, just make sure your sump can handle the excess water from the overflow.

I also clean my overflow once a month. I didnt glue my durso standpipe to my bulkhead for this exact reason. It makes it really easy when you can just pull your stand pipe out and clean. It also makes it easy to catch a fish if he goes into the overflow box.

Not removing the standpipe. Just remember having a difficult time installing. Tight fit no room. I was swearing up a storm.

I'll just avoid looking in there for now

In that case when you do a WC fill up your overflow and let the detritus flow into your sock.
