I have a prefab stand that is a little too short. I'd like to raise it atleast 6", maybe even 8. I'm thinking of constructing a riser using 1x6 or 1x8 for the sides, front and another in the middle---> |_|_|. Rear is open to save on having to buy 2 boards. Top will be 1/2 plywood. Would this be strong enough to hold up the tank (~32g), stand, lights...etc? I'm trying to keep this as low budget as possible hence the 1" boards instead of 2".

I think it can support the weight but I wouldn't trust it's structural integrity from any force pushed side to side and risk it folding on itself. I'd invest in the extra piece or find some scrap of wood in the home depot clearance bin for the rear.

I didn't realize a 10ft plank of 2x8 was only $10 so I just went with that. Even without screwing everything together I was able to stand and rock slightly without it toppling over.

This should prop my tank up to where I don't have to stoop to look at it.
