Every one to two weeks you should see a difference in color

If I post a pic of the color it might actually look lighter or darker than the actual thing. But there's a way to find out with homemade tools.
First get a straw
Preferably red but white works too
Bend the tip
Slowly lower the straw vertically in a 90degree angle until you can't see the bent tip. Measure the distance
Around 1.5"-2" is 3-4weeks from harvest
Around an 1" is 1-2 weeks from harvest (can be harvested at this stage but it isn't dense enough for what's considered a "full dose"
Harvesting should be 1cm depth or less

Here's a pic of a culture at harvesting state

NCP means nannochloropsis. The numbers represents millions per ml
I like to harvest mine at 1cm
The straw test isn't as actuate as purchasing a density stick however it's pretty close

i stir mine every time i walk into my cave. i keep meaning to make something that will automatically stir them.

i harvest mine after 6 to 9 days. one is always darker than the next, so i mix them up and feed the tanks the mix.

Nice. How long did that take?

This was 21 days. I started 4 2-liter bottles. After 2 weeks I added more starter culture more fert turned up the bubbles and reduced light. I had 2 lights on both sides of the bottles so I moved one to be indirect.

This harvest came from the darkest bottle. I'm hoping leaving half the bottle would speed up the process.

Might try juice bottles instead of 2-litter because the bottoms make it hard to mix.

I didn't measure density, just going by color for now.

Thanks for everyone's help from this thread!

Do you guys only add F2 fertilizer only once in the beginning?
I have a gallon of fresh saltwater dosed with f/2 medium set aside. Every time I harvest (every 3-4 weeks) I replace the harvested water with the water in that gallon container

I have a bunch of medical syringe dosers. I bought my primary one from walmart.

F/2 doses at 1ml per liter.

I do 1 liter containers at 1.020 salinity and dose 1 ml in each container as the very last step.

I harvest about once every 5 to 7 days. Some weeks are better than others, and 3 weeks ago we went through a real cold spell with especially slow harvesting; i think i only had one series of harvests for all of January.

That being said, yes, i only add ferts at the very beginning of the batch.

I've been having a terrible 2017 when it comes to harvesting phyto.

I decided to start fresh. New containers, bleached all contact surfaces.

Not sure what has been bad to my cultures, but i have not had a bit of dense green for quite a while, and my pod culture is crashing.

I might have to start all over again.

Aw man I'm sorry to hear about that

Every third to fourth harvest I empty out my containers and restart the culture again to keep things fresh.

Bigpapii another test for ur agar culture. Try starting a liquid culture with the agar culture. Do a whole disc so there is a lot of volume. This will test viability of the cells to test the question of if they kill each other since they are stacked on top of each other.
