Just got my first clam for 20 bucks and am looking for more near Anaheim within 20 miles that don’t break the bank thanks

Most nice clams are going to be way more than that derasa. Also, you'll probably want to make sure that the derasa is getting plenty of light.

Unique just got a large shipment of Aussie cultured maximas, but I think they're going for $120. They're about 2 1/2" - 3". Also, check with Ali, he usually has clams from ORA.

He’s not selling. He’s letting you know where to go. $20 on a clam is very cheap. I’d also move it away from those 2 corals. That will sting it

The purple maxima is the one I just picked up from Unique. They had lots of blues and few ones like the one I picked up.

Sorry to hear! Anything nipping or due to water quality? I’ve found clams pretty indestructible at 4”+. Smaller specimens tend to suffer in aquarium settings.

Nothing bothering the clam and it survived pyramids, a rogue yellow tang that took out two maximas, etc. I’ve been caring for clams since the 90’s, sometimes they just take a turn. Usually you can see if there’s an issue, but sometimes it just happens. I find wild clams are the hardest long term, as they’ve been conditioned for a very long time for life on a natural reef, only to be dropped into mediocre conditions in our tanks. I’ve never found size matters with clam health or longevity, that tends to be a myth perpetuated by people who’ve never kept clams. Clams can support themselves when just a few millimeters big after they’ve acquired zooxanthellae.

Here’s my 10g with a couple croceas and a derasa.

Nice tank & clam collection! I used to have a few small maximas but they didn’t last more than a year, no symptoms — just slowly perished. My current teardrop is the longest so far (knock on wood). I’m actually a sucker for derasas myself — they can grow huge quickly! Given my recent obsession with carpet nems, I can’t really keep both — out of floor real estate!

btw: hope you got another ginormous tank to house these guys — they will be 8-12” in a few years?

Thanks! The croceas will take forever to reach full grown adult size, they typically max out around 6” with most of them being slightly smaller. The only one that needs the room is the derasa and a have plenty of time and room right now (it’s moving to the 90g soon). Maximas are the second slowest and smallest clam, so there’s plenty of time.

I have a small 1" Biota captive bred derasa clam. I started with two, but one of them didn't make it past the 1st day...as I saw it didn't have the foot, so probably not healthy.
