nice! i want to get some chalices but i'm not sure where to put them...LMK if u have any stuff on sale!
I will do, I am thinking about chopping my Alien Eye next. I chopped it a while ago and sold and traded about 4 frags from it, but it has since grown back full circle again. I prefer to hook the buyer up and not give out 1 eye booger frags especially of chalices as I believe that they do much better and grow much faster with at least two eyes. I will let you know if I chop the alien eye.

Chalices are pretty expensive, regardless of which one you get, I usually charge minimum $20/eye depending upon size and type of chalice. They require very low light to get the craziest color combos. I have most of mine under an overhang or in some type of shade. A couple are not, but all other ones are in shade at the bottom of my tank.

Ya Chris, most of mine are in a shaded spot. I do have a good amount of flow, but chalices can really go either way. If you aren't seeing the growth that you want from them, take them out of the shade and put them under direct lighting. This should increase there growth tremendously. If it does not and you have the filter or water changes to do it, you can also spot feed them as they are carnivorous. If you spot feed them watch your params, but after maybe a month or so you should see them blow up! I have had chalices for a long long time and I will also say that if you have little booger frag they will usually take forever to grow more. Once they reach about 2 to 3 eyes then they will begin to take off and grow more eyes much more rapidly.

As far as the More Light = More Growth, that is not always true with chalices. Usually they will do better if they have an ample amount of food in the water column that they can eat with there tentacles.

Here is a picture of one of my chalices I took last night showing the tenticles...about to come out.

From my observations the growth ratio should go something like this... Less Light = More Coloration - Less Growth, More Light = More Growth - Less Coloration.

I do a couple different things, currently for example I have my Purple Urkle chalice being blasted by light as I want it to grow as fast as possible (As many people want a piece of this) so, I am feeding it and blasting it with light to make it grow. It will not look really have the sweet colors because the colors will fade out as it is being blasted by light. Once I get a good amount of growth then I will put it back in the shade for maybe a month and let it color back up. LPS corals especially chalices will always color back up in shade, unless there is something wrong with the water or whatever. If you have any further questions about placement, let me know and I will take a FTS of my display so you can see where most of my chalices are.

i guess i should spot feed more. i do from time to time but not offten. i do have a little 1 eyed bugger that is mainly what im talking about not growing. i have seen small growth in a few others i have but they are lower in the tank. i think ill move that bugger down to the shade as he is the highest chalice right now.

my red lava chalice is always looking thin skinned. why is that? its in full light though. maybe it need shade too.

that totally depends on the lineage of the coral itself... wild colonies sometimes never do well under high light... from all of my chalices that i have and have had, all of the real collector pieces that have been around for ever do great in high light... like my BGM... its getting blasted with light... loves it... it turned bright green instead of fading and is growing retard fast...

also, a lot of so called LE corals that were just discovered in the reefs, don't take high light or even our light as well as others...

btw... the chalice you don't know the common name is an aspera, and that alien eye isn't an alien eye... there's only one watermelon chalice named tub's alien eye... and this is it...

That was the only coral I've ever smoked all of my other chalices are doing great. It must have been just stress from going through 3 tanks in 1 day. Keep all of my chalices in low light low flow

Then what is it? I am not sure of the two, the orangish red smaller one I got at tongs. I forgot what they told me it's common name was.

yea, if I were you I would just put all of them in low light, I personally have mine in pretty high flow and they do pretty well. However, they do very well in low light, low flow as mike said.

Your chalices look great!

I only have a miami hurricane which has grown a little in about 6 months. Currently it's on the sand bed, but the colors are washed out. I'm going to try that and put it in the shade and spot feed it more.
