My wife wants a dslr camera for our trip to Greece and I know nothing about them other than someday I want a sweet macro lense for corals lol

What would you all suggest? Nothing crazy expensive say around $600.

Thanks.

Get something like point and shoot, I heard the Sony's are good for that.

Point and Shoot cameras are those that typically fit within your pocket and/or purse (in your wife's case)

DSLR cameras are those which are larger and have interchangeable lenses

Its a matter of what you plan on using the camera for; simple photo taking, or if it's something you plan on getting more involved in.
OIC yeah she wants a baller camera not a point and shoot, not sure why I won't argue haha

is it just for the trip, or do you actually want to have a real camera around to grow to in the future?

i would get a canon 50d + 28-135 lens. very good camera with lots of potential to grow into, and a good all around lens that's sorta wide, and sorta telephoto.

something like this

I have a 50D and it's an awesome camera. I also shoot with a 5D Mk. I and it's more than enough, IMO.

I don't need a newer camera with all the video functions or whatnot; I'd rather spend the money on quality lenses.

Here's a good website to check out. I like the way this guy thinks, no bullsh!t.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm

Be honest about what you are going to use the camera for. I'm guessing neither you or your wife are professional photographers, so don't go out and buy a pro camera thinking that it's going to take better pictures, you'll wind up with an expensive camera that you never even use because it is too big and has too much gear to lug around. The point and shoot advice people are giving you is solid, some of them also have pretty bad-*** macro capabilities.

+1...Point and shoot cameras have come a loooooooong way...definitely worth comparing since she may get everything she wants in a compact, easy to use camera.

this is a hilarious (yet informative) post about a guy's journey and buying tripods.

it doesn't apply directly to this topic, but it does make a really good point about knowing what you want to do with the equipment.

Take advantage of the fact that "she wants a baller camera". Then later on, u just need a macro lens and your set. Look at the canon rebel cameras. I think they are decent entry level cameras.

Don't waste your money on a point and shoot. Your iPhone/droid takes the same **** pics. Unless your goal is to blow them up and make posters out of them. Lol
