so, i picked up Richard's old sump (by way of Sanh, thanks again dude). the baffles are kinda beaten up, so i'm going to re-do all of it anyways. I'm looking for suggestions now.. :)

it's a 60x18x20 tank.

working backwards, there's going to be the return section, the baffles - but at that point, i'm looking for input.

my current sump is laid out:

overflow -> sock 1 -> sock 2 -> skimmer -> fuge -> return (there's no baffle).

for the large sump, i was thinking:

overflow -> parallel socks (3) -> tall fuge (18x18x16 section) -> skimmer -> baffle -> return.

thoughts?

Or drain, skimmer, return , then fuge. Then tee off the return and plumb it to the fuge with a valve so you can control the flow through it.
Kinda like this...

but the skimmer needs to be in shallower water, which is why i wanted the fuge first. i wonder if i can just hard plumb (sealed) the skimmer return to the fuge.

You probably could hardline the return but it might create a lot of back pressure which would mess up the adjustability.

Did you want all that flow of the return going through the fuge? Maybe split the drain, one into the sock and the other into the fuge and then skimmer and then return?
Thats why you put a valve on it. Mine is a slow trickle. Just enough to mive the macro a little.

Just to the left on the pvc coming from the return pump you can see the ball valve on the line going to my fuge.
I have it set to just cause a small ripple on the surface. This keeps the water from cascading into the return section creating microbubbles, reduces noise and increases contact time for the macro
I must say that since I did this sump my macro's growth rate has nearly doubled.
