An idea I've had for a year or two. Maybe it can actually come to fruition.
Here's my idea. I'd like to organize a basketball tournament between reef clubs over one weekend during the summer. I'd like to rent out a gym, so the games will be held indoors. Each game will have 2 legit referees and a score keeper. Would be college/high school rules, zone or man defense, 5 fouls per player, 30 second shot clock on request, two 20 min halves, etc. They'll be real games, so if you're going to participate you should have some idea of what the rules are and how to play organized basketball games, but not required at all. I don't want it to scare or intimidate anyone from not playing. I do want it to be something fun that as hobbyist we can get together and have some good times. I think it will be fun.
So here are some rough ideas.
1. I'd like to get 8 teams and do double elimination tournament style. Each reef club is to enter at least one team. I'm not sure how many clubs there are, but maybe the larger club like scmas might have more people that want to play so perhaps they enter 2 teams, maybe 3? If it's single elimination then we could do it on one Saturday.
2. Each team should have at least 8 guys, maybe 9 or 10. I know I'm out of shape so I can run the whole game. It's up to you tho, obviously 5 is the very minimum.
3. Each team will have one designated team captain/coach who would be in charge of organizing his/her team. IE: collecting the teams fees, gather players, in general making sure all the players are informed (basically I don't want to have to answer a ton of the questions, I'll be busy with the rest of the organization of the tournament)
4. I'm guessing just off the top of my head that it will cost each team about $350-$400 entry. So you're looking at about $50 to play. That would cover the costs of gym rental, referees, score keeper and prizes.
5. If you belong to multiple reef clubs then maybe best to support the club you live closest. Of if one reef club is short on players you can play in the other one.
6. As for prizes I'm thinking each individual player who plays will get a Southern Cali Reefers Basketball 2015 t-shirt, and the club that wins will get a par meter which can be shared amongst it's members.
Nothings concrete, it's just an idea at this point. I'd like to see who even has the slightest interest. I know costs and date, even location is a big part of everyone's decision. But if I can just get an idea if there's even enough interest to do it then I can take the next step.
If we do single elimination the costs will be less and of course we just do a one day event. Probably easier on everyone's schedule and travel.
Keep in mind #1 priority is to have fun. So no matter how old you are, how out of shape you are, how many airballs you'll chuck up there, it's all about having a fun day with your fellow reef buddies. Let's face it were in a laid back hobby we're it's ok to be lazy, overweight, and un-athletic. This will even give some of you guys other there a chance to turn back the clock and drop those 3 ball bombs like you did back in high school and college! :elefant:
Let's start a list of names.
