Just got my first pair of clowns. They are my first fish. My tank is cycled, ammonia and nitrite are at zero, but nitrate is at 10. I'll fix this with large water changes once I get a decent mixing bucket. Atm I can only do 5 gallons. But at night I noticed my smaller clown wriggling at the top of my tank in the corner. He did his best to just stay in the corner and play dead. He didn't have swim bladder disease bc he can swim just fine. Later in the night the larger one joined him in the corner.

I've read that they are just trying to sleep(true??) and that they have nothing to host. I threw a conch shell in so maybe they'll sleep there but idk. I stayed up late bc I had an immense fear of my clowns dying... they were fine in the morning...

They will be fine just make sure you have a cover on your tank. They can be spooked and jump when they are getting acclimated to their new home.

yeah I've had clowns host weird parts of the tank including top corner. You're fine. Just let them get comfortable with the tank

They can also be establishing dominance roles if they are a young pair. Often one sits in the corner to submit. just make sure they are not overly aggressive towards each other. Your fine, but I second the lid!

My clown hosted the inlet when i first put him in, sleeping parallel to the ceiling of water. When i got a second, he emulated the first. I put in two additional powerheads and they now go between those and the inlets.

I have a hammer, torch and frogspawn coral, as well as an rbta.

They have no interest. I have seen video of people forcing clowns into a 'nem by using a long tube that terminates into the 'nem. I tried this for an hour last night, but i think the tube was way too wide.

I' m going to order a narrower tube and try it again.

No kitten learns to use a catbox until they're shown how, so i figure the same philosophy can apply to a fish.

I'm getting a top... or else I'll worry for the rest of my life. Do you guys recommend screen or glass tops?

I have a conch of that size that i used initiatally as a bristleworm trap, but have since given up on. Let us know how it works out.

My female clown goes close, wiggles, then leaves. My male doesn't really care. They still both end up in the top corner playing dead....

My female is spending a lot of time in the conch but my male is still acting like a dying fish in the upper corner.

It's a rather large conch, maybe the little guys intimidated?
Maybe. The male has yet to join the female. She starts stays in the conch at night but the male just loves those corners. I repositioned the powerhead bc of flow problems but maybe he'll take a liking to the conch now. Or the other corner..

My male did that when they were establishing dominance roles... put a screen or something over the top of the tank while this is going on because it'll try and escape from the female. My male hung out in the corner for like 2-3 weeks until one day I woke up and noticed it was missing and when I checked my sump, I found it there... the female must've bullied it out of the tank. Either way, it'll subside after a couple weeks or so. I've heard of horror stories where the female bullied the male to death but... hopefully that doesn't happen... good luck to you!

I think Gary nailed it. Looking at the pictures the two clowns are similar in size and may be determining thier roles.
