Hello all. I need some help with some anemone's that have started to take over my reef. I had the incredible opportunity to inherit racinjason's 720 gallon reef two years ago when he moved to Texas. The reef has been happy and healthy but recently, the anemone's have started reproducing and have started moving all over the tank. The live rock is unfortunately large enough that it can't easily be moved. If anybody is near South Corona and thinks they can "encourage" the nem's to move, you are welcome to a few. I've probably got about 10 that I'd like to see re-homed. They are healthy and between 4 to 6 inches each. They are unfortunately antagonizing a leather coral to the point I'm afraid I may lose him. If anyone has any advice on how I can get them off the rock, I'd appreciate it and the offer stands if you want to come by, PM me and we can setup timing.
Thanks!

I can help you with this but it will require a little bit of moving the rocks. I'm close by too. Are you giving them away for free or for a price?

Use a solid color plastic Tupperware and place over the nem to block light. Hold it in place with a loose piece of live rock on top. They'll move on their own to get direct light. If you're lucky they'll attache to the Tupperware while they're walking to get out from under the shade. If not, it's alot easier detaching a walking nem then one with its foot settled into the aquascape. Good luck!

I bred RBTA's for many years.

What I would suggest you do on a tank that large is to freeze some water bottles. Forget ice cubes. You need something bigger. A water bottle will work. Also get a fish net, easier if it is big.

Put the water bottle on the foot of the nem. Right on the edge where it attaches to the rock. Put the net over the nem so when it detaches it doesn't just land someplace else in your system. Usually takes less than 10 minutes.

If you want to add a powerhead to this as well, that is great.

I have done this method well over a hundred times. I harvested 16 in a day once doing this. It works very well.

If you were closer or if I wanted an anemone I would come do it for you, just to see a 700g tank.

If you want to sell them when you detach them, a kitchen strainer works pretty well to hold them in. You can toss it in your sump. I personally used one lined with astroturf as it would hold the nems in but they couldn't really get a good grip on the turf so you could hand scoop them out.

If the mother colony was not huge and they are splitting multiple times I might double check your alkalinity. To force splits I used to drop alk in my breeding tank and then raise it up again to get them larger. Sometimes they split and there is no real reason why.

Good luck.
