I wonder what the odds are that it will actually be lifted
seems like if it were based on actual science, odds would be ever in our favor

but it's political and the locals don't seem to be in favor of aquarium fishing at all, so color me skeptical. we might as well try, though

Why dose everyone think it is a ban???
They are doing an environment review on the trades collection process. They haven't stopped the collection as we all still see Hawaii fish being brought in. The judges ruling was that no new licenses be issued until the three year review is completed.
Everyone who has a license before the "ban" can still collect fish.
We have all just bought into the hype and retailers are taking advantage of everyone with these outrageous prices.
If they banned everyone there would have been lawsuits over it as a license cost money. This is also people's livelihood.

And the irony of it all is that ornamental fish collection is the smallest part of Hawaii's fishing. While commercial fishing catches an annual 2 million pounds of fish. With who knows how many by catch. The group that brought the ban are commercial fishermen which is my favorite part.

Yellow Tangs, Achilles Tangs, flame angels, blonde naso Tangs. These are the ones I have seen yesterday at the LFS. You can just watch Harrys live sales and see most of the "Hawaiian" fish. But there were a ton of restrictions on how they were caught before this.

For instance, The yellow tang is found in the Northwest and Central Pacific ocean from southwest Japan to Marianna Islands, Marshall Islands, Marcus Island, Wake Island and Hawai’i. From Allen et al.

So why do we only pay as if they are from Hawaii?

But with supply and demand of course they are going to tell you the worst case scenario

Even aquacultured yellow Tangs have gotten in on the price jacking.

Just think of the Indonesia ban where we saw no coral being brought in and you couldn't find anything.. but now they can bring in coral by the boat load, but prices remain the same.

End of rant lol sorry

I’ve been looking for a potters Angel and none of the 5-6 shops I go to have been able to order them. They have not been on the lists. I think it’s more likely that the US suppliers OVER COLLECTED knowing the ban was coming, and built up a stockpile of yellow tangs etc (knowing the price would skyrocket) and they’ve been slowly sending them over. Cuz I have still seen some yellow tangs coming into shops, but it has been fewer and fewer. And NO ONE can get me a potters Angel 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m not saying you’re wrong but I would think if shops could still get these fish from suppliers they would be ordering them…

It could be it is just harder for people to collect and I know many divers only had provisional licenses of 2 years in Hawaii and they haven't given out any new ones.
So most of them have expired now.
So only the pepe who could afford the long last license still have them.

But who knows in the end

I know the feeling of the potter angel man. But I never really saw them before the ban when I lived in SD.

Would love two of them to try get them to spawn.

This was also a very fun read about the increase of yellow Tang's I'm the Hawaiian islands View attachment 6_FISHLIFE_YellowTang.pdf

several of those you listed are not endemic to hawaii. flame angels, for example, are very rare in hawaii, but plentiful elsewhere in the central and southern pacific

have you seen a potters angel lately? a potters leopard wrasse? a tinkers butterfly? bandit angel? red tailed tamarin wrasse? flame wrasse?

yellow tangs do seem to still appear, i'm not sure if somebody is finding some in the surrounding areas like tahiti or marshall islands, or they're just catching them and illegally exporting them from hawaii, or they just stockpiled them before the ban knowing the price would go up

Oh yes I agree with you that no, these fish are not endemic to Hawaii as I said earlier, but we are still paying a premium for them as if they only come from the Hawaiian islands.

I haven't seen a potter angel as I also said as I have been looking for 2 cause I want to spawn them.

But in reality I am not someone who is importing fish and am just reading articles off the internet as we all are. I'm also talking with people and trying to figure it all out. Wondering why we have to pay so much for fish that can be bought at fish market for a fraction of the price.

Here are some flame wrasse I found for sale. Not sure if these are the ones your talking about.
The other ones I am not sure as anything with a high price tag I normally can't afford and just love to see in other tanks

But you bring up a great point that they might have stocked up when hearing this might have happened.

Also great knowledge on Hawaiian fish!

Any updates on this? I heard the survey is to be finished in November and that’ll determine wether the collection will be able to continue or not
