Just out of curiosity if anyone has dosed/currently dosing anything in their reef tanks as a form of protection against infections or bad bacteria even BJD that may enter into their system. Any general information from anyones past experiences or insight would be great just as a save for when needed type of post.

If for prevention probably best to do antibiotics in a QT tank prior to entering the display so you avoid that oh shit moment. I'm not sure if it works for LPS/Brown Jelly but there is an article on the reef moonshiners website for a witch hazel in tank treatment. It's geared towards bacterial issues in acropora but might be worth a read for brown jelly. I haven't tried it personally. I was going to but my tank seems to have corrected itself for now.

I've been tempted to pick up a clearly sick gigantea anemone and treat it in QT with witch hazel to see how it could work on that bacterial issue.

Haven’t heard of witch hazel yet I’ll give it a read for sure!

I've dosed witch hazel before with no issues, good or bad. I wouldn't dose antibiotics just because, this is a sure-fire way of creating an anti-immune environment for bad bacteria to take hold in the future. There have been several articles in the past couple years talking about over-dosing antibiotics and the potential problems that it may cause. I'm with Smite, use it in a QT setup, but only use it in a display as a last resort.

supposedly dosing antibiotics in tank as a prophylactic treatment is the new thing especially for imported stuff. people claim it's a cure-all for BJD and RTN. i think jake adams has talked about it, among others

color me skeptical it's a great thing especially as an entire tank treatment

i've done abx baths for fish and corals and it does work for both. i had a mega iffy frag from RAP that was definitely early stages of rtn that i saved with a cipro bath. but i made sure to discard the water in the dirt and not down the drain which seems problematic at best when people are doing large in tank broad prophylactic treatments

Can’t go wrong with witch hazel since it’s tea tree oil add some melaluca and you got melafix.
