Caulerpa is illegal in California. If you are going to use it, please make sure you dispose of it responsibly by freezing anything you take out of the tank in a plastic bag for 48 hours before throwing away, and treating any water you remove from your tank with a UV on the way out. Strands of caulerpa getting into the port cost the state billions to eradicate. It grows incredibly fast off our coast and chokes out native species, and also contributed to the urchin explosion.
If anyone is offering caulerpa, best to do by DM.
Cheato has become a lot more commonly used and is much easier to dispose of. Granted, it is not as effective as caulerpa, but it is also much much less dangerous and the precautions on removal are non existent. I think if you try cheato for a refugium need, you will be equally happy. Most of our tanks don't need the explosive growth, nutrient suck that caulerpa is capable of.
