If it comes down to having to use 2 fixtures you need to have them the same length cause the bulb wattage are different so the light output will be different. 48" will be 54w while 24" is only 24w and will be dimmer.

If it was me I would not attempt to do it myself. Especially on a tank that size. Even if I had it professionally done I'd still leak test it outside for at least a month or two.

Perfectly normal. Trying to chase a perfect number with buffers will just make things worse.
