I've actually noticed it the opposite in my fry tanks. When its slightly tinted green the ammonia had already climbed much higher... I wouldn't trust it to measure the accurate amount of ammonia in a tank. That said, you don't have an actual ammonia testing kit? IMO the badge should really be...

I've had these two together for about 2 months now (my favorite pair). I just know they'll give me good nice genes (hopefully, knock on wood). The female is from a known breeding pair and the subzero is a new juvi I had just gotten. 2 months I guess is not that long to wait, but man does it suck...

I would suggest at the very least, a formalin dip if you're not going to QT. It doesn't catch everything but its definitely better than nothing.
