    Thoughts about RAP

I went with my wife and kids Saturday, because I thought the kids would get a kick out of seeing all the nice corals and stuff that are not in our tank. Unfortunately the place was so packed we knew the kids would get clobbered trying to squeeze through the crowd to check out the booths. My...

Just got my BRS single reactor for Carbon and GFO =D

For GFO and Carbon (and combo GFO-Carbon for smaller tanks), the BRS works fine. I think BRS trying to use it for biopellets is pushing it quite a bit. I have tried a couple of methods of using carbon + GFO in the same BRS reactor. 1. Separate GFO (bottom) and Carbon (top half). Pro: You can...

    TDS too high?

How is the resin in the DI chamber? Water could be channeling there and some TDS could be slipping through. Do you have a single DI chamber?

    Your RAP shopping list Go!

I'm looking at the event floor plan for this year. Wow that will be a lot more booths compared to the last two years. Building 10 is not the Hangar, right?

    aquarium movers

Post the approximate date/time that you are planning the move, and whereabouts in Fontana so we can all figure something out (no need for exact address at this time). If the schedule works out I can swing by and help. I also have a couple of padded furniture rollers that we can use to reduce...

My 2 year olds 1/2g tank

That would be cool! My wife and kids would be more than happy to volunteer to help with that if RAP wants to do it next year. They love these arts & crafts things. And she knows the stores in Downtown L.A. where to get these little doodads.

    need help

Most leathers are like that. It takes a while for them to acclimate to the new tank, and after they they pretty much start a mission to take over the tank.

    Discount on Equipments @ RAP?

The larger vendors usually have "in-show discounts" for equipment. I got my RKL Basic for around $75.00 last year, retail price was around $120.00 at the time. And yeah, free t-shirts from a lot of vendors :)

    Overflow

I would like to add that a "coast to coast" overflow on a back-drilled tank would give you some extra real estate on the tank's floor, instead of having a box type tower taking up space.

That T-shirt looks great! Is that hawkfish eyeing the shrimp?

    Overflow

What kind of overflow box are you planning on using? Where is the tank drilled? (Bottom vs back) Since you are building a brand new tank you have a ton of options on how to build the overflow, it just depends on your preference.

    Attempting to use kalkawasser...again?

That is typically what Kalk dosing would be for. It should be used to recoup the lost Ca and Alk consumed by corals/critters so those parameters remain close to constant as possible. Most Kalk products also contain very little (if any) magnesium, so that would need to be dosed separately or...

Changing Salt mix..do I need to tiptoe?

Mixing salt with water is a chemical reaction, as opposed to just dissolving something into a homogenous solution (like mixing sugar with water). With the latter, supersaturation is not an issue as eventually adding more water will allow the solution to "catch up" with proper saturation and...

    Attempting to use kalkawasser...again?

3 tablespoons = 9 teaspoons Kalkwasser saturation is around 2 teaspoons per gallon. So with your mix, (9 teaspoons / 5 gallons) you are just under saturation so a pH of 12.5 would be expected. As long as you are dosing slowly and into a high flow/turbulent area, it should not spike your tank...

I'm looking for wavy LPS types. Euphyllia, elegance, etc. But not the bank breaker ones. And maybe a fungia too.

Red Sea Reef Foundation Test Kit - Old and New Kits have different readings

Thanks for the link. I did not realize that each bottle in the kit had different lot numbers. The lot# I listed was just for the Calcium-A. My calcium-B has lot# 2103, which is on the recall list. So that explains the calcium test issue. Thanks again :)
