Personally, a few years ago when I lived in a studio I would just unplug my heater during the hotter weeks. My tank temperature stayed around 78-80 which was fine, my fishes or corals didn't even noticed. During the cool seasons, when there was a hot day I would freeze a few 2 liter soda bottles...
