I currently have asterina infesion as well. There were afew of them and then hundreds of them in couple of weeks. They eat all the coraline algae on the rocksand some of my zoas. I just bought a harlequin shrimp and the population is coming down.

Actually the salifert has the expiration date on top of each box (it's like a price sticker). Aa long as it is not expired, I think it's still good to use.

This and the ORA mandarin are the 2 last fish I want for my tank. But I already spent my allowance this week for my new T5 bulbs. I'll wait until Friday (payday) if they are still available and hopefully a price drop :).
