    Can fish have allergies?

Sheldon the seahorse was allergic to water in Finding Nemo. But in your case it is unlikely 2 different fish species has the same reaction to a food. Its more like the food poisoning weaker fish.

    Let's talk ATOs

ATO tech refused to advance much over the past decade because its stuck as a volume maintenance device and not a salinity maintaining system. most will agree volume can now be very reliably maintained with the float-magnet-optical sensor triple safety devices out there. but what about true...

    Kalkwasser Reactor / Stirrer Suggstions

Ive used them all and will only buy the ones with a cheap maxi jet recirc pump. The pump needs changing out every 3-4 month, so a $20 400gph pump is acceptable, and certain reactors it is quick and easy to do when full. Stirs plates failed very fast as I make a supersaturated slurry with...

No More Garbage in the Free Stuff Section Please

Meanie! (broke arse) Some artist should melt down 1000 pounds of reef garbage/free stuff and mold a 20 foot tall acropora frag, paint it white, and call it make-you-poor-a, as tribute to the reef gods.

No More Garbage in the Free Stuff Section Please

I was being sarcastic, of course. Happy reefing!

No More Garbage in the Free Stuff Section Please

Because LFS have overhead. Real small business is hard, and I can relate.

No More Garbage in the Free Stuff Section Please

I agree, get rid of the freebie section so reefers buy from sponsors instead. I used to give my junk to LFS so they could make $ off it. Dealing with broke arse reefers is always a pain. Besides, how many times have we seen free stuff later posted up for re-sale and the original giver got...

Digital Aquatics is officially no more

I had and RK2, RKL & lots of modules. But it was like owning a hyundai genesis. No amount of explaining would convince anyone.

    Got stung

Paronychia. Early, might still be able to cure with antibiotics. But probably need the knife. Avoid aquarium zoonotic infections: http://www.alltropicalfish.com/saltwater-topics/59-fishkeeper-health/145-9-ways-to-avoid-zoonotic-illnesses-every-fishkeeper-should-know

    Got stung

Looks like you have an abscess. Antibiotics wont get in there. Before you start having fever, you need to go to your doctor now, for incision and drainage. Or urgent care or ER. Probably your provider will keep it open & youll have to go back in a week for closure or have a just have ugly scar.

    Socalireefs lack of participation/activity

If im not having fun, im not even on here. It would suck if the need to make $ turned reefing joy into the Hunger. As I have no skin in this game, I buy from sponsors. Winning.

    Who uses Ozone?

One last tip- ozone lasts nano seconds in water so try to have the ozone generator tubing as short as possible and enter the middle of the reactor so there are a lot of water molecules above to react with O3. O3 free radical reactions terminate well in water. Other guys I saw had the ozone...

    Who uses Ozone?

Search some of my (& Lawrences) old threads here. Today, I pontificate not cogitate.

    Who uses Ozone?

Ive used O3 for over a decade as well. Its not that risky, it has a short half life and doesnt travel far. Its used in home water purification systems. In the long run not nearly as dangerous as UV, or all those high wattage/high amp electronics near the water, with the risk of electrocution or...

    Reef Charity?

I donated a setup to my kids preschool & they quickly changed it to freshwater- reef maintenance & electricity costs are prohibitive. I tried Goodwill but they didnt want it. If youre looking for a tax write off it wont be much.

Can you have too little turnover through the sump?

again, my main point is a real sump is all just water and nothing else in it, and its main job is to help maintain the water volume of the DT. so the faster your sump pump refills the DT, the better it is doing its job. my second point is that filtration can be discussed completely without...

Can you have too little turnover through the sump?

How much DT water gets the sump is a complex question. In most cases the over flow drain is at the top, but the return is also at the top, so you are re-draining a lot of what you just pumped in. How much deep water gets to the overflow would depend on how much flow you have inside the tank...

Can you have too little turnover through the sump?

Thank you sir :) A sump in its purest form buffers the volume of the main tank (DT). Most reef filtration is biological: live rock, sand, algae. Hybrid sumps (filter sumps, refugium sumps) are a form of remote filtration. And increase ease of maintenance. Difficult maintenance is the 3rd most...

Can you have too little turnover through the sump?

The definition of a sump in the scope of a plumbed circulating system is a pit or reservoir serving as a drain or receptacle for liquids: such as. a : cesspool. b : a pit at the lowest point in a circulating or drainage system (such as the oil-circulating system of an internal combustion...
