Small update, I tossed a few tester coral in and so far everything seems happy. Also picked up a conch to help clean up the sand, went in for nassarius but this was all the LFS had. He’s pretty entertaining though honestly and moves around the tank fast.

Turns out the LFS did have nassarius, was just buried haha… so new tank mate brings the snail count to 5. Need to add some more fish and have a sweet surprise on the way soon

Before you know it. Your CUC will cost more had you not bought online. Reef cleaners has deals.

haha yeah online has some deals but I like supporting local, plus I’m in San Diego so we just pay more here for whatever reason but I’m happy with the 5 I have now. This hobby is already so expensive I’m not too worried about saving a few bucks honestly haha.

I am thinking about picking up some fish from Dr Reef though and having him quarantine them for me. That does cost a little extra but I like the piece of mind and so far my LFS has not had the fish I’d like to get.

Update for the tank, things are getting interesting as of late. My Alk has been dropping like crazy last week and a half so I assumed an algae bloom was inbound and it has arrived. I have now encountered green hair, dinoflagellates, Cyanobacteria, and some diatoms. I also had some aiptasia show up on the $5 frags that I had picked up but I quickly addressed and I haven’t seen any sign of them in a couple weeks… I am sure they will be back eventually.

to help the tank I picked up a couple shrimp (cleaner and peppermint) and I am now at 7 snails purchased and I found a baby turbo the other night… not sure where it came from haha. I could likely use some more with how much algae is popping up but we shall see what happens.

I got a little too excited and did something I probably should let have… but it happened and I now have some new tank inhabitants lol. Total of 10 frags and a nem who wasn’t very happy with me at first but seems to be settling in nicely!

I also setup my dos pumps and reservoirs to help battle the alk for me so I am not having to do it manually everyday. Working on tuning that now but so far so good.

I also seeded the tank with some pods, but right after I got them I noticed a ton in the tank already… oh well. I’ve been feeding them a little phyto and I see them eating algae on the glass.

Some pics for fun

Lookin good! Clean build.
thanks Lou, I’m settling into something of a routine at this point. Checking nutrients daily still but I have the dosing at a point I remain fairly constant. I am currently fighting PO4 and NO3 consumption from the ongoing ugly phase and the tank trying to figure itself out. I have added more fish and am up to 6 at present.

2 clowns
1 white tail tang
1 lawnmower blenny
1 blue hippo tang
1 flasher wrasse

so with that I am feeding a bit more and monitoring to try and keep things happy.

my skimmer also took a dump on me, the impeller started to fall apart so I decided to upgrade!

now rocking a regal 150sss, well it’s off while I watch nitrate and phosphate but it’s in the system!

I have also been toying with setting up a UV and carbon/gfo reactor. I have a dual BRS that I purposefully left room for but need to figure out how to jam a UV in. I’m thinking I’ll go with icecap because they seem to be the smallest package and have decent reviews. I have the manifold setup with 2 outputs so I will just need to add some barbs and shouldn’t be too hard to get going. I don’t need them yet but I have a feeling they will be needed at some point so thinking of just getting ahead of the game with the plumbing/setup.

also considering adding some flow metering but that seems extra haha and a bit more work than I need to do

I will mount the dual reactor on the wall under the apex and am thinking of placing the UV underneath or something not sure yet.

Some update pics of the tank inhabitants, most everything is doing good. I’ve been battling the nutrients as I mentioned previously and experimenting with the flow a bit to try and keep everything happy. I haven’t actually measured my PAR through out the tank but was losing some color so I’ve ramped up intensity on the XR30 and that is seeming to help. I am sure the low PO4 and NO3 played a role as well but overall things are going good this far.
