My Tank Build
#21
Sorry to hear about the tragic chain of events. My tank is currently at 84.9 with lights off for the last couple of days. Been out of town as well. Fortunately have a big fan over the large tank to keep it within range. Im sure Im out of ATO water at this point.

My tank was around 84 today, soft coral and most LPS survived (lost an alveopora). Another tank at 88, it's an empty tank with just feather duster and spirorbid worms. Both survived.

That's rough.

I don't think you can rely 100% on check valves. It's good to pair it up with a siphon break.

On the bright side, it wasn't your main tank.

Just an update: no more losses. Corals that survived seem to be doing ok. Even many things that were in frag tank. Frag tank drained and most corals were out of water for a while. Treaky’s, Gold hammer, regular hammers, frogspawns, digi, elegance, many zoas, a few sps- all were dry and I thought they were goners- but surprisingly most have opened back up and look ok.

so considering the mess I had and the fears I killed everything- it turned out not nearly as bad as I thought.

I reset AC to energy efficient setting- increases temp to 78- it doesn’t run as long or as hard and tanks have been steady between 79-80 which is a little warm but ok for me. I had ac set at 73- and it had to work over time to keep it there- I believe this is what caused breakers to trip. I also unplugged anything not needed in the fish room- at-lease until we are over this heat wave. Before this week- without ac- tanks didn’t get over 81 max, and was usually 80 or under. I also ripped out the return from the frag tank. It was plumbed to where it went down to the bottom of the tank to “clean” under the racks- so no way to do syphon break. I plumbed in a temporary return just under the water level- will get better bulkhead and Re-do it proper just in case another power failure. But now all returns are close to water surface to it should break syphon before over flow.

but man, I was super bummed. Just glad most everything made it (so far) I thought the worst when it happened. But thankfully it wasn’t as bad as it could have been.

Sucks man. It just sucks.

When things get stable come over to Long Beach and I will give you some frags. I have a couple I need to clear and I can cut a few more if you like stuff I don't have frags.

I won't get you to where you were, but I can get you a few to start back up. Who knows maybe I have a crash one day and you can give me a frag of stuff I lost back.

Sorry to hear that man. I try to run the AC 24/7 at my place due to the heat and that keeps most of my tanks at around 80-81 degrees. A portable AC is also another option if you can get one.

Yeah this past heat wave was nuts, lost 3-5 frags since I was out of town and parents were probably being cheap and didnt turn of the ac. Theyre some what alive by STN at the moment. tank still gets to like 83 on cooler days

The days are shorter and the heat does not come early like the last 2 weeks. I'm in Orange county, so it is less extreme like the inland areas.....you guys might have to take another 2 weeks, but out there you guys are already prepared right? :)
