Thought I’d post here because I feel like a newbie. A 57 year old newbie who started saltwater about twenty years ago after buying a tank with a strange HOB filter, weird rock and lights I never seen before. An Aqua Remora, saltwater rock and CFLs. Some research and what it became is first photo. You think that’s a tiny tank with a Remora on back? Nope a 30” wide 30 gallon show. Looks big because of the overflow box that came with the Remora. Something you never see for sale along with them anymore.

So after being out for seven years. I thought I a nanocube for the garage. 12 gallons some rock a few fish in there, feet on the work bench watch Roku glance at the tank. So the search began.
I stumbled on a 40 breeder, stand, sand and sump, water jugs for almost nothing, $50. Bigger than I want, but too good a deal. I own it. Then an ad for 80 pounds nice rock for $40. What? I can buy, use half and sell the other make my money back and still be at $50. just gave away what was left. At $90. SWC120 skimmer for $45, own it. Brix refractometer $7, learn the conversion, own it. Tried selling it on here and the other ad sites. Some of you talked me into setting it up. $142
Anyway. I learned when seeking a chiller is not to search for aquarium chiller but hydroponics. Druggies. I can hear the gasps and screams of CHEMICALS. Listen, bleach kills and cleans everything. It’s in the water we drink in the form of chlorine and of which you swallow inadvertently when swimming too. So I see a chiller for $250. Offer $90, I own it. Cleaned it, dust filter had two inches thick of dirt. He didn’t even know it existed. This time of year where tank is in garage the water low has been 72 in the morning after with outside temps in the 40s at night. So we’ll wait and see what summer has. May not need it If the ambient isn’t bad. $232
Lights? Search, and thinking no way am I spending more on lights than all the other put together. Amazon, pictures of peoples tanks with Aquaneat and Nicrew LEDs and stating corals have doubled, keeping clams. I now own a Nicrew with dawn to dusk controls, $60. Give me a break, this hobby started with standard fluorescent T12 bulbs. Stole the Jebao DC4000 from my pond and put some other low watt pump on it, Amazon $50. $342
No livestock yet but copepods. Seeded and cycled my tank with a rock out of HB harbor down the street across from the dry dock boat repair place at low tide. The mussels died and started things going. Now I need to catch the line crab I see who’s about a quarter inch long before anything else goes in. Caught his buddy the other day. Wonder if there is other plankton size crabs in there? Or who knows what? Free copepods came with it. Salt mix I’m back in for about 350/400 bucks with no livestock.
Now I see the Factory backing guy wants a 40 breeder drilled. I got one, yours for $600.
Here‘s some shots of it. No fancy stuff, bare necessities. Born that that way.

Caught one of the lined rock crabs. Now for the other I think I may have killed, hopefully. Can’t start adding anything they will eat before I do. Who knows how many there are since they start out plankton size at birth. Guess that’s a good reason not to use rocks with mussels from the harbor to cycle.

Doing pretty well now with nothing more than a heavy cleanup crew. Sure it will do better with dirty inhabitants like fish.

Wow. First pic brought back memories of some of my first tanks. Love the pre-LEDs look. I still run 1 daylight 10K T5 lamp on my fixture.

Then you’ll like these. The picture with the giant blue overflow was what I graduated to after that 30. 6x54 over both of those tanks. I separated ballasts and split start times on them trying to replicate time change.
I remember the craze of all the LED build kits people were doing. Touting they went from 2 or 3x250 watt MH’s to 25 watts of LED. Now everyone is back up to hundreds of watts with LEDs and still running fans and chillers.
Looking at those pics again. Most expensive thing was the purple Tang. I think he was $50. Clams were like $20 for a 4” one. The killer corals I think were BamBams, Rastas and a Tyree whatever that was/is.
