So I sent out an ATI test because I got on reef moonshiners. My Sg came back at 33.47 checked with 2 refractometer they showed 35.7 bought a new bottle of refrac juice and a fanna marin hydrometer. Tested out the FM hydrometer and it showed 38ppt checked the refracs with new calibration fluid they were off 2 to 3ppt. Why does ATI show so low? Anyone ever experience this issue?

Salinity has been an on going problem for me to understand what the correct number is. My ATI actually came back super high from them. Hannah and Milwaukee both gave me different numbers. Still not sure whats correct.

Glass hydrometers usually come calibrated to a set temperature, so you’ll have to adjust based on your current temp. The Tropic Marin hydrometer is pretty damn good and reliable. Refractometers on the other hand are usually way off if not of a certain quality and type. Most are made for a brine solution and not actual seawater. There are two known brands that I trust, VeeGee STX-3 and DD H2Ocean. Also, if your calibration solution requires shaking or mixing, it’s garbage and shouldn’t be used. If I don’t make my own, then the only brand I’ve ever trusted was Aqua Craft. RHF has a DIY recipe with table salt to create your own solution.
The thing to remember with both refractometers and hydrometers is, you need to keep them clean and free of saltwater.

I trust my tropic marin hydrometer. My low temp is set to 77F and I believe that's what the hydrometer is calibrated for. I check salinity early in the day around that temp. My last ATI showed very close to what my hydrometer shows.
