Just curious if anyone is breeding banggai cardinals locally?

I am considering giving it a shot- just curious if anyone else is or had done it- wanted to ask a few questions:

1. how is best way to get a pair- it’s hard to identify a male/female until they get older- do you just get a group and see which matures? Or just try two and see what happens?

2. do you leave them in main tank until the male is holding eggs? Or do you keep them separate for the entire breeding process?

these are a few questions I couldn’t find online with clear answers. Any suggestions would be great-

I don’t have them yet so if anyone has a male/female pair I would be interested (will take the guess work out lol)

I'm currently taking a break from breeding so I don't have any pairs available at the moment but I'd be glad to tell you what I know about it.

A good option would be to get 4-5 and keep them together until a pair forms then rehome the remaining fish. A better option would be to get 2-3 from one source and 2-3 from another source and hope you end up with a pair forming with one from each source. The best option would be to get 2-3 from one source and 2-3 from another source and keep track of individual fish by their markings and make sure you make a pair from two different sources for the best genetic diversity. However inbreeding among wild banggai populations is fairly common so I'm not sure it's worth the hassle, certainly wont hurt.

If you are able it is ideal to separate the male before he releases the eggs as well as after to give him some time in between batches.

Here you go. I got my breeding pair from him and they have had babies in my tank 2 times now. Pretty awesome experience.

I've added some videos and updated the vent photos! I don't post on R2R anymore, I'm pretty much just here, Humble.fish and SDreefs now.
