Hi guys. On my new 225g tank build. I'm thinking about setting up a calcium reactor. I was thinking about getting a GEO. I need some suggestions on good source for information about calcium reactors. BRS vids? Also some recommendations on how to set up a calcium reactor. Also building of regulator. What's the new techniques for setting up regulator? Thanks for any help!

I build my own dual stage regulator link here and it was worth the upfront cost. I also did a DIY Calrx that I bought from Avastmarine Fluidize Media Reactor Here using their fluid reactor which I can link here to the post if I can find it, but geo is bang for your buck without having to put it together. A lot of people are doing the carbon doser instead of dual stage regulator, but I like dual stage because it looks sexy and works well for end of tank dump. As for your feed/pull pump tons of people are doing Kamoer stp pumps to fine tune. Rico Aquariums on Youtube has a great video on a setup for geo. A calcium reactor is nothing more than a chamber in which you melt calcium carbonate substrate and introduce the solution back into your water.

Things to consider,
A) It wont leak
B) it has sufficient volume that you aren’t opening it every few months to add substrate
C) the recirculating pump is protected from grit damaging the impeller, pump on top is one strategy that is time tested
D) disassembly for maintenance and adding substrate isn’t overly complicated.

Next component is the Co2 regulator. IMO, for our needs, the carbon doser is the best option for a Calcium reactor, It’s not overly expensive, very consistent and stupid simple to setup.

Lastly is the effluent control. Masterflex paristolic pumps are the top of the line but they are rather expensive, can be loud and are very large. I use manifold pressure from my return pump and a precision needle valve. My approach is smal, silent and inexpensive but does need to be inspected weekly to ensure it hasn’t clogged.

As far as setup, I recommend setting it up as if there wasn’t a pH controller involved, just slightly more acidic. That way if your controller fails, and it will eventually fail, your reactor won’t start killing things in your tank. For many many years, many people ran CARX without pH probes. Simply take pH readings and DKH readings from the effluent every few hours and adjusting until you get the desired result.

Even though this article is almost 20 years old, I still consider it the definitive guid to CARX setup
