I’m running low on GAC again and looking for suggestion as to which brand to buy. I’ve used this that and the other and the only one I had any real problems with was a 50# bag of bulk I got on eBay last time the tank crashed. Mostly i have been sticking with mainland black diamond. It’s been consistent and seems to last well but it has a price premium.

Mostly I just run carbon for a few days if I ever start smelling any “low tide” in the living-room. Mostly it a prophylactic measure against the Mrs bitching me out but I also have the sense that when i can smell the tank, it’s time to clean the water a bit.

I’ve been using the ROX carbon for a while with no complaints. I know it’s not everyone’s favorite due to the small size, but it works great in my mini BRS reactor. I do like the high surface area and I use a ball valve to dial in the flow and make sure it doesn’t tumble. Might not be cost effective on larger tanks though

I just use the ones from BRS, placed in a disposable nylon bag in the high flow area of the sump. Since I don’t have any leather anymore, I don’t change the media that often…
