I've never kept coral (FOWLR) but I know there are strict water parameter limits, more so than with fish.

But once the water specs are good and lighting is ok, what is the upkeep like? Do you need water changes, skimmers, sumps etc.? I ask this because it seems as if fish contribute to most of the waste (nitrates) in my tank. I assume all the critters in the LR do so as well.

Is it easier to maintain water quality in a coral only tank?

Thanks

i wouldn't recommend it... one thing that fish do in the tank is help keep pest in check... including algae, pods, worms, snails, nudibranch, bristle worms, and other pest...

but if you do want to do it i would want to use 100% dry sand and live rock... get a packet of biospirra and cycle the tank on itself for a couple of months... that way you know there are no hitch hikers, or anything else like algae, you don't want on the long run...

but i'm just thinking as i type... lol...

Coral only tanks can be great! I also like invert only tanks--with snails, shrimp, etc. Less feeding means less nutrients for sure, but a clean up crew is always nice, IMO. Just be aware that taking care of nutrient build up from excess feeding is only one aspect of tank maintenance...
