Ok so let me pick ya brains. I see tanks with crazy equipment and those tanks water looks great and corals/fish doing great. Then I see other tanks with nothing but a sump and a protein skimmer and those tanks water looks great and coral/fish doing great. So the question is “do we really need all that equipment”?

I been in the hobby for years and I’ve just had the sump and protein skimmer. Just curious if people see a difference when they have all the extra stuff.

Equipment can be super effective if you use it correctly. Take the mindstream, if you really understand water chemistry, that unit can be a game changer

More better Equipment will help lessened your task and indirectly help you to maintain the tank better. 90% tank crash due to lazy n neglecting the task of maintenance the tank

I see where ya coming from but I don’t know if it’s just me but I see people with dosers, reactors, and all these other things and then like I said before I see people with the bare minimum and both tanks look amazing.

There is no doubt that u can have an awesome reef tank with bare minimum equipment all it mean is u have to do more task. I'm a lazy reefer so I know my weakness therefore I try to automate as much as I can now the only task I have to do is clean the tank soon i will get the robo clean then I just sit back and enjoy :)

LARS : lazy ass reefer syndrome, the extra automated stuff helps me be lazy with my daily life schedule with more time for me to enjoy my tank. The more redundancy items we put in such as controllers for monitoring and extra heaters for fail safe. Ato for not having to lug water around daily to keep it stable. Some people are equipment junkie and that makes the experience more enjoyable as a hobby while there’s people who like to keep it simple. There’s the sps guys who are usually gear head because of stability and high end corals they want to keep alive as they invest a lot of money into it. Then there’s the softie and lps tanks which usually doesn’t care about fluctuations and keeping it simple works for them. There’s many ways to do things that works for everyone’s needs.
