I have been dealing with a bad cyano outbreak for the last couple of months and it was really starting to discourage me. I was determined to solve the problem by finding the root cause and not jumping straight to chemicals. What a mistake that was. I read and tried many different approaches until I finally admitted defeat and used chemi-clean. The cyano immediately disappeared and the tank looks clean again. I took a few FTS now that my tank is somewhat presentable. The cool thing about a cube is that you have 3 FTS.

This set up makes me want to get a cube tank again. Your setup is well thought out and looks clean. Glad the cyano problem worked out for you - usually when I get it I realized I needed more flow but there is more than one way to do things!

Your tank's looking great!
Man, I've been in that same mindset for the last month. Really don't want to run chemi-clean but I've got flow cranking and just straight mats of cyanobacteria almost everywhere.

Maybe I'll siphon what I can and bite the bullet.

Thank you Chowberg. I don't think that flow was the problem as the cyano on the sand was continuously being blown away but then would grow back. I'm pretty sure the problem was with a bacterial imbalance, but no matter how many different types of bacteria I added, the cyano out-competed the new bacteria.

Thanks Matt, I really regret not using chemi-clean sooner. It's been a couple of weeks now and I haven't noticed one adverse effect so far.

Nice. Now you just need that robotic glass cleaner thing. Those still a thing? Anthias have to be the best fish out there. Maybe add a handful of blue/green Chromis for contrast In the swirl of things.

Yeah, anthias were a must have in my tank with their beautiful color pop and I especially enjoy watching them shoal, usually only in the morning oddly enough. I've had bad luck with chromis being jerks in the past, so I don't think I'll be adding any. Never heard of this robotic glass cleaner, is my glass particularly dirty?

Not dirty from where I’m sitting. Just all the automation seems you should have one of those things.

How is the growing phyto in your stand going?
It's going well, it's only crashed once in 9 months and that's because I was busy and forgot to harvest one week. I'm pretty diligent about cleaning and the air pump is located outside of the tank so it gets clean air. The pod culture on the other hand was not so successful. The pod numbers just slowly declined and I'm not sure why.

Nice tank! You had me at 36x36. You might want to check PNS Probio as a biweekly tuner bacteria dose. It's great stuff and does wonders with nutrient control and keeping the undesirable stuff like cyano at bay. Can't wait to see how this tank progresses. Great work!

Can you please tell me what brand are those pipe mounting clip you use. Thanx

If you're referring to this metal clamp, it is called a conduit mini, it's usually for electrical pipes. I'm not sure the brand, probably Caddy, but you can find them at Home Depot in the electrical aisle.

Thanks for the recommendation. I actually believe that the cyano outbreak was started by a nutrient deficiency. At the time the cyano showed up, my phosphates and nitrates were both 0. I've been feeding more and even added a couple more fish to keep nutrients up.

The tank looks great, inspiring for sure! I am working on setting up a 24x24x24 cube so I like what you have done here, wish I had that much cabinet space! Haha

Are you not running the Neptune DOS and GRO yet, I didn’t see those in any of the pics? Wondering what you thought of the GRO if you are, I was thinking of picking one up.

also how are you liking the Regal 200sss?

I’m super jealous of your water setup haha, how convenient!

Thanks Coffboss, good luck with your cube. Lighting and flow can be a challenge with cubes but I love the look.

Both the GRO and DOS have been up and running for over 6 months now, the sump pictures are just old. The GRO has done a great job growing chaeto, it doubles in size every week or two. I'm sure there are plenty of other lights that grow macroalgae just as well but it's nice that it doesn't take up outlet space and is easily controlled by the apex. It's also somewhat water proof because I dropped it in the fuge once and didn't have a problem.

I've been very happy with the DOS, I use it to dose kalkwasser. The first peristaltic pump that I had bought was the ecotech versa, but I had nothing but problems with it. I switched over to the DOS and have had no issues what so ever. Unfortunately/fortunately, alk consumption in my tank has gone through the roof and I'm almost to the point where my kalk addition rate is meeting my evaporation rate. I knew the day would eventually come where I'd have to look into getting a calcium reactor.

The 200sss is nice, I really like the Varios pump and the controller that it comes with, it makes tuning it pretty easy. This is the first skimmer I've had in quite some time, so I don't really know how it stacks up to others on the market.
