Hello All,

So I have had my DT running now a few months and have been trying to isolate sources of noise.

The Durso was surging orginally and I foxed that via drilling a larger hole. But the tank still seems a bit loud I understand it will not be completely silent but being that it is in my living room I was hoping for a little quieter.

I thought orginally that it was water bubbling once hitting the sump. The downpipe is about 1/2" lower than the water level. It seems like thats not the case though, it sounds like its just water running down the drain. Like the pipes are not "full" is there a way to quiet this down?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you have air trapped in the drain line. That was my issue. The way I had to fix it after each return pump shut down was plug the bottom of the drain and let it fill up with water and let the air float all the way up. You'll close the return a bit but itll be quiet.

Robert,

Appreciate the response!

Thats exactly what I was thinking my only concern is the drain pipes are bigger than the returns can keep full. When you say "you will close up the return" you mean i should do this by turning down the flow down, or plugging the drain will just result in this.

I had a gate valve on my return to adjust it and get it dead silent. I would adjust it but still get a noise. That's when I plugged the bottom for a couple seconds and the air floated to the top and came out. I then had to close the gate valve a hair to keep it that way.

I mistyped... I have a gate valve on the crib side... not the supply side. I adjust the main drain to be silent.

Got it, thats what I was thinking about putting in.

How far up from where the pipe meets the sump is your gate vavle? I would assume that too far up you would just have the same issue below the gate valve.

I have a straight piece about 4" below water line and 4" above with a 45 then the gate valve then another 45 up to the bulkhead.

Robert,

I got it thats basically exacly how mine is setup. I will order up the gste valve and see how it works out I think it will help with noise and salt creep from excessive splashing.

Wow what a difference that made cant believe ive dealt with that long with as loud as it was. I think the hole I orginally drilled in the top was too big though cause its a little loud and echoy but thats easy fix. All i hear is the skimmee humming away now though.

Appreciate the reply and help!

Yeah but I can figure out to post pictures on here. Always says file size too large. Do I need to use a third party photo hosting sight?
You should I use imgur

Got it, easy enough. Photos below.

This is pretty basic stuff but, when I plumbed the system I thought ahhh what the heck how loud could it be. Turned out to be loud enough to bug me + with all that water just rushing down it created tons of salt creep. Now my sump is much more calm. 1st photo original downpipe 2nd photo downpipe with added ball valve. Went with the ball valve as they were readily available yet I can already see the benefit to having used the gate valve as most suggest.

Unfortunately the quality of the images went way downhill after resizing.

If your linking you don’t need to resize

Any reason why you went 45 degrees instead of straight down?

I tried to not resize but the photo came out to large once on the thread. Unless you mean linking as a link to the photo and not actually embedded in the post?

Despite how the picture looks the sump is not directly under the down pipe. Its 50 ish gallon corner tank pain in the butt haha!
