yes. for me a 100 will clog in about 3 days where a 200+ micron sock will last a week.

Is there really a huge diff between the 225 micron and 100?
Yes huge difference I prefer 100 Microns but do need to clean the socks every two days and keeps tank very filtered and less particles. Only down side is I do need to allow more tome when I feed my corals as some things get sucked up and filtered out. I think it really has to do with preference and your maintenance routine.

Filter socks are there to polish the water, and really, that is about it.

If you want to just them for nitrates, you're going to have to replace them often, and ultimately, cleaning them will feel like a waste of time in the long run.

Im not saying that it isn't doable, but you'll want to just buy a pack of 10 or more so that you get a bulk discount, and then after you go through 8 (replace them once a week), throw them in the washing machine in a garment (bra) bag and wash them in hot water with a small amount of bleach with a rinse of warm and a rinse of cold.

You only get so much use out of a filter sock before it is permanent clogged, and you might get more life with a more intense wash with something like oxiclean, but that detergent still scares me. You could also try vinegar.

That being said. 100micron will filter better, but it will undoubtedly be a bigger headache, but for what? Slightly fewer nitrates?

Don't kill yourself. Go with the 200+

Rinse Botha sides and scrub them throw them in the washer with Clorox. Usually comes out pretty clean. I wouldnt do oxyclean. I know some leave it in a vinegar bath while they replace them then wash them all at once when they run out.

I switched to using the RollerMat since i hated cleaning the filter socks. But then after a few months I realized detritus was building up in the RollerMat as well.
The good news is that even with the detritus my nitrate is still under 2ppm.

Also: most pool stores sell 27% hydrogen peroxide. This stuff works magic and does not require rinsing afterword, as it simply breaks down into oxygen and water.

You can also purchase food handling HP (33%?) for a bit more expensive at RSSes.

27,though, is perfectly fine. Don't wash, just put your socks in a bucket, pour in enough until they are covered, lightly cover it, but don't seal it, and then walk away for a couple of hours.

How do you like the rollerMat? How big is your tank? I was thinking about using both

My tank is 125 gallons. The rollermat is kinda big and so I plumped everything to the side of the tank instead of under the cabinet. Be extra careful when plumbing for the rollermat since I made the mistake of having it be the main recipient of the drain from the tank. As I increase flow in the tank the drain becomes too much for the rollermat to handle and inlet starts to make big bubbles with loud bubble noises. So I had replummed so that the rollermat only gets 50% of the drain from the tank.

Furthermore, the rollermat eventually collects all the detritus and algae and critters much like the refugium. So I'm not found of that aspect....since I'm not sure whether to clean the whole thing every couple of months or just let it be (serving as a second refugium).
