Flatworms are pretty easy to check for. Take a suspected piece and blast it with a powerhead or turkey baster. Really focus on the deep crevices. You'll see little flat worms go flying off. They are extremely hard to spot just looking at a coral.
I've found flatworms on corals out of gorgeous colorful tanks when I got home and dipped. If you friend dips, that could also be pointing at a pest. Hopefully not, AEFW are a pain in the ass to deal with. I've been there.
That's not to say it's your issue, but with flatworms I think a filter sock could actually keep them from going tank to tank. It could also be a six line making the difference.
I would think if it was bacterial then it would more than likely be affecting both tanks but I'm not 100% sure on that.
