Hi my name’s David and I’m a 16 year old that’s in love with this hobby I’ve liked nature and the ocean in specific since I can remember coming home from school and going on the family computer to just watch and learn about are planet going to the beach every week to swim I would see some colorful fish, inverts, macro algae, and corals at first I decided I wanted a fish tank when I was 14 amazed by the fresh water scapes I would see and fish but after 2 months research my sister moved back in and with her she brought her salt water tank the thing that really blew me away was the canary blenny she had I still can’t forget when I first saw the fish I was amazed by how colorful it was bright yellow brighter then a highlighter that’s when my 5 month research began at first I wanted a mantis shrimp learned everything about them but I went to the fish store for the first time and got kidnapped by the wonderful world of corals asked the shop owner ever question I could think of that make me cringe at the thought of my dumb questions as of now but 4 months later I was confident in my knowledge and started looking for a tank ended up finding a 35 gallon cube the exact one my sister had and had to have it so I forced my mom and my sister to drive me to the high desert to get that tank looking back at now it was a pretty dumb thing to do but I don’t regret it at all after that I had the tank sitting in my room forever because once I had it I was nervous I was gonna mess up so what did I do 3 more months of research and finally with my sister pushing me to just fill it with water I did it cycled it for 2 and a half months just to safe some how evaded the ugly stage and got my first living being a cleaner shrimp fed him a cube a day letting him live a life of a kind before I introduced 2 Bangai cardinals and another cleaner shrimp 2 weeks later I was loving my tank but it was missing things so went to my list I had bought a long nose hawk and my first coral a green acro on the $20 rack took them home and both did great over time added more coral a six line wrasse and a bunch of clean up crew the acro was doing great incrusting and everything I tried adding other fish but my hawk either bullied them to death or straight up ate them also had to get rid of one bangai both males eventually tank hit 7 month mark everybody was doing great my hawk surprisingly aloud two more fish a lawnmower blenny and a pink spotted goby but a month later calamity struck little cousins were over and poured nail polish in my tank 4 acro colonies, 2 acro frags, 1 touch later the tank was stable again but again calamity struck tank started leaking a week later had a 60 gallon I had been putting off setting up and it came in handy used 2
Drawers we had laying around in the living room and got to work starting at 10:30 ending at 2:00 it was done my soul had been saved lost another torch and 2 acro frags but I’ve never been good with torch’s and the acros were barely hanging on after the nail polish incident now we’re at present time rescue tanks been up for 3 weeks everyone’s happy with it besides my gobby since his hard work was taken from him added 2 small tangs today 11/15/2023 a convict about 3 inches and a sailfin 2/5 inches there lovey make the tank feel like a reef and eat like pigs at first my hawk did court them around but the have found common ground probably my last purchase for a while since I’m broke but next thing on my list is acros no more children unsupervised in my room btw to prevent another extinction event

Sorry for the bad literature just wrote what’s in my head if you actually read that congratulations it’s finally over

I have been in this hobby for a while and have never seen this table. Pretty cool!
there are a lot of versions out there do a search on reef compatibility chart. They are not perfect .. but its a good place to start for someone new in the hobby (not you per say.. but someone starting).

You have a good start! Keep going, we all started the same when younger and not a big budget. This is where you learn the most because it is all hands on and you are figuring out what works and doesn't. This prepares you for the next upgrade down the line. I think my first tank was an used 60 gal, bow front acrylic, and it was a lot of fun...and just DIY'ed all kinds of things for my tank since I couldn't afford most equipment.

I appreciate the warm welcome as for what’s my stocking I have a six line wrasse, long nose hawk, lawnmower blenny, pink spotted goby, bangai cardinal, a convict tang, and a sailfin tang and I’ve broken a few rules first I’ve never quarantined a fish coral frag or invert second I’ve never tested my water besides salinity and lastly not doing water changes as frequently as I used to

This is a picture when I just added the hawk fish my original set up a 35 all in one used. I used a a80 tuna blue kessil light but soon found out it was not enough for my needs then I upgraded to a prime 16hd but then decided to go over kill and get a hydra 64hd used of corse Learned the hard way the light was strong bleach some corals so I toned it down this picture below is of when I was still using my first light

Still very early in my tank was around 4 months old at this time got rid of my acros because I thought they’d be happier in a tank with more light but then upgraded 2 months later so that was my fault since this picture I fraged the red monti and sold it and same with the birds nest and gave the torch to my sister for her birth day

This is today corals aren’t opened up all the way but I’m pretty happy with it overall just wanna get some more sps frags and maybe add a blue neon goby waiting a few months when I have all the acro frags I want I’ll start cranking the lights up slowly to avoid bleaching this time if anyone has advice or suggestions I’m all ears

Ngl Im hating a little that a 16 year old has a better tank than me jk keep up the good work dude. Practice makes perfect. I’ve made a bunch of mistakes in this hobby but this forum is a pretty tight community of cool people who like to help out.

Your are most likely going to start running into some bacterial/algae issues here soon.. with elevated nutrients then the tendency is to over correct trying to get rid of cyno , dyno, green hair etc... seesawing back and forth causing more issues..... Next investment I would make is in some testing kits and log them to look for trends.

They key is stability.

I get what your saying I’ll probably start testing soon but I did already have a small out brake of cyano and green hair algae because I was lacking on water changes and had a sea urchin die while I was away for 2 weeks over all it wasn’t bad at all did 2 water changes in a week then did my normal once a week water change the reason I don’t do water changes as frequently anymore is because of school and I run filter floss and a protein skimmer I still have some green hair because I never removed it but I don’t mind it and my hermits tangs algae blenny keep it under control also I only feed Corals once every 2 weeks and fish 2 times a day but will def take your advice thanks
