I want to buy a or some water pumps for my 60 gl tank I was looking at the Hydor Koralia 3 pumps which is 850gph but how many gph is what I need? and is there such thing as too much circulation such as those that give you 1200gph I already have a Koralia 2 in my tank, any tips or advice are greatly appreciated...thanks!

PS if anyone can post pics of your tank to see how or where to set them up for some good waves,it would be of great help. Thanks again!

gph is important, but you also want to consider flow throughout your tank. you do not want to have any dead spots (or keep it to a minimum) in your tank.

i agree chipcount. I actually have 1100 gph in my 24 gal aquapod lol

i have the two return pumps pointing down, the koralia 1 towards the front pointing up and the maxi jet 1200 in the back right towards the bottom pointing up. This is an old pic but the flow is still the same.

just consider the ocean....theres TONS of flow and the corals thrive in it. It also depends on what corals you are primarily keeping. SPS love a lot of flow but LPS do not need as much. i.e. I would personally rather have two 600gph pumps rather than one 1200gph. But also remember that if you have a lot of pumps running in your tank, it may heat it up the water (if you are not running a chiller already).

the water would heat up more likely if you were running 4 powerheads instead of 1 just due to friction/movement of the powerheads. the powerheads just naturally produce heat when they are working. even though it may be minimal, you can see a difference in the tank temp

you know like when you have electricity running a motor and it gets warm? or even your car after you drive it it gives off heat?
well like that.

I have some xenia that seem to close up when too much flow is directed toward them... then again I have a pretty dirty tank
