ideas how to keep objects off intake of seio 620

anyone modded their seio pumps to keep objects from trapping in the round intake as shown above?

i have the same problem. the only thing i have seen done, is to cover some of the wholes so that things that float over top don't get dragged down. there is i no real way to stop this. if you have things floating in your water column then these pumps are gonna grab them because the move a lot of water. what is that? some macro algae?
