My stand and sump are the same size. Fits great but things do get a little tight in there:

Stand is LeeMar and is the same dims as yours. Sump is LeeMar and is 40"x18"x20". If it were 2mm bigger it wouldn't fit lengthwise because of the internal side supports.

Unfortunately I don't remember the exact model of skimmer. It was the one with the 8" cup and rated for 300 gallons. I like skimmers with gate valves rather than the big up-tubes. Love it - you see all the black gunk in the cup in the first pic? :) Only thing I didn't like was that out of the box it made a lot of splashing noise from the return. Just added an extension with a 45 and it silenced it.

Reef octopus sells silencer kits for there skimmers. It's basically a PVC 90* that comes off the gate valve. The new skimmers might even come with them

For anyone concerned with detritus build up in the first stage, there will be a powerhead/pump such as a maxijet at the bottom to keep detritus suspended and send it to second stage to be filtered by filter socks which will be changed out every 4-6 days.

Orrrrrrr u can not run filter socks and ditch the pump, and just siphon out the detritus every now and again.

Also u don't need that pump to rub 24/7, u can just turn it on every once in awhile to stir it up. I have 2 pumps in my sump to do the same thing.

Looks great.

How much clearance do you have on the interior of your stand?

I measured the inside of a similar stand last night and it was approx 44" in length.

I would definitely go that route if I was going barebottom, but i love the natural look of sand so this method/design will help with removing detritus that i will periodically syphon from the sand as well as the breakup of the initial bubbles. this also makes it easy to remove/exchange/rotate filter socks in order to polish the water. in the past all my sumps had the traditional one filter sock that was a pia to remove because it was under the drain pipe and forearms had to get wet to get it out of there, so this method makes it easier, and as we all know, the easier maintenance is, the more we are likely to keep up with it.

But i do agree with you about the pump at the bottom not being on 24/7. just sometimes to move all that crap that may settle.

can you post a pic of your tank overflow rob? not quite sure what you mean.

Like this:

...and I guarantee you'll love it. Most people can't even see my overflow and it doesn't take up any space. The only issue I had is that my return comes out from the same side of the tank....if I could do it over I'd have it come out the opposite side to push the tank water back towards my overflow. So, do this.

That's exactly how my gf's tank overflow is. Problem is that it doesn't run as small as in your diagram. I believe leemar runs them larger to almost the forefront corner. As you can see on my diagram of my tank, my return will be on the opposite side for exactly the reason you mentioned.

Ya I think you're right about my size proportion... I think mine comes to about 1/2 the depth. I love it... you know what you're doing so I'm sure the new design will be awesome.
