Has LE just become part of the names on a lot of these corals lately or is it just me.
I just keep seeing LE this or that and are sold at top dollar on pretty much every coral site or sold from individuals.

Some are and some aren't depending on how long they've been around and how popular they are. There are also some knock offs around. Lastly, in SoCal we are lucky to be in a hot spot of coral.

FWIW, Steve Tyree started the LE thing wayyy before there were any internet vendors. Limited in the sense of a coral doesn't mean the same as a car like there were only so many built, at the time it meant you could get on a list. One person on the list would get a frag and the next person would have to wait for their frag to grow out before it is distributed, making the coral 'limited' in distribution...

"LE" and "named corals" are just a way for someone to sell them for more $$$ .... nothing else! IMO.

While that is true there are IMHO advantages. First and biggest is that the coral has been aquacultured for several generations. The coloring and aquarium adaptability have proven to be stable and you know exactly what you are getting. Sometimes there is a story behind the piece, when and who imported it. Im not saying that they are the best or the most colorful but it gives the piece another interesting aspect.

Yes LE does exist...unfortunately some use the word for anything they sale. Its making the industry crazy and often considered more than a precious coral. Most now are just in it for the money not for the beauty of the coral. Of the people who are selling corals and uniquely identify them LE always ask where they got their pieces and how long one has had the coral if your gonna fork over the money. At the end of the day ...as long as it looks nice it should be okay but sometimes you just purchase the name

It's a complete scam. If someone uses the term "LE" they are either trying to scam you or were scammed themselves. The only reason these corals are "limited" is because people try to charge $100 per eye or polyp. IMO it devalues the hobby and makes some sellers look like the jack@$$es they are.

Pretty opinionated statement. I guess it couldnt be because the buyer liked the coral and in his perception it was worth the exchange.

i agree. most of the corals i have in my tank have stories behind them. i have a few wild and majority are aquaculture. you can tell the difference from the 2.

Steve Tyree actually regulates (limits) the availability of his LE corals based on the waiting list and harvest schedule, unfortunately this creates demand for knockoffs, lookalikes and side farmers to come in and reap profits from people who don't want to wait

The concept worked well at first but it is pretty ridiculous now, in what sense is it limited edition if it is widely available, At that point it is a mass produced coral akin to an ora frag

The term LE has become a marketing term to build hype and we all use it (myself included). For me it is like a coral pyramid scheme; the first people to buy pay top dollar with hopes of growing it out to sell and the cycle perpectuates until the coral is so common we are giving it away (Idaho Grape Anyone?). The only people who profit are the original colony holder and anyone who can find a similar knockoff piece
