Send me the recipe when you do. Not sure my wife would approve me chopping up seafood for the fish tank, but I'm willing to try.
I’ve been making it for three years now, each batch costs around 100-200 dollars and lasts almost a year for my well stocked 125G. (The range is depending on how much frozen fish food you want to add)
I just grab the big boxes of raw frozen seafood I can find at Ranch 99 (I find there is more frozen bulk items there than H Mart. And the clams are fresher)
This is off the top of my head, and I usually just walk around the frozen seafood section to find deals and nice looking seafood, so the recipe isn’t set in stone.
Frozen in box:
shrimp
Squid
Some sort of whitefish (or not frozen)
Scallop
Live or unfrozen in seafood section:
Clams
Lean whitefish
Dry food:
Pellets
Nori
Spirulina powder
Selcon
Freeze dried rotifers
Frozen fish food
Mysis
Krill
I pulse chop the seafood in a food processor, I usually do half finely chopped and half less finely chopped, as some of my fish like chunks. (I lost my trigger this last month though so everyone prefers finer chopped)
Don’t over blend the seafood as it becomes mush.
Just do a test on some chunks and throw it in the tank while making it to see if the fish can bite.
Then I mix in all the chopped seafood, the torn up nori, the pellets, salon, etc, as well as the unfrozen mysis and krill.
I love adding the clam meat but IT IS A PAIN to shuck them live.
I tried oysters but they are too mushy and juicy, so I do Manila clams. I hear freezing them first can be easier to shuck but I didn’t find it any easier.
You can also add stuff like fish roe or others but the trick is to find ingredients that are not seasoned or uncooked
Your food processor will smell of seafood, but I just chuck in half a lemon in there, chop it up for a while and the smell goes away.
After all that, I pack them flat in multiple gallon zip lock bags, and when I need them, I break them into tiny chunks and put them in another zip lock bag to use on hand.
I tried the small silicone ice tray thing but wasn’t that great
